Brits in Europe Launches in the Sunday Times Magazine

Kathryn
plays the fairy in the Venice pantomime that is put on every two years. She
spends her winters in Venice and her summers in Yorkshire. She likes the
anonymity that living in a different country brings.

In the run up to the EU
referendum on the 23rd of June I have been photographing British people living in Europe. The project launches today in the Sunday Times Magazine. 
From Morris dancers in Denmark and archers in Estonia,
to students in Spain and pantomime fairies in Italy this project captures the
lives of British people who have chosen to leave their homeland and create a
new life for themselves. Featuring 71 portraits of British people living in 7
different EU countries the project captures the variety of lifestyles that
exist across the continent and shows us a new side of the European debate.
With the prospect of the UK
leaving the European Union I was determined to see what life was like for those
Brits who live in the EU. Over 1.2 million
British people currently live in other EU countries, yet hardly anyone is
talking about them. No-one knows what will happen to them should we vote to
leave. Will they lose their right to residency? Will they loose their pension?
Will they be able to own their own businesses or access healthcare easily?

My hope for the project is to
get people to look at the European debate from a different point of view. I want people to move beyond the
stereotypes and statistics and see the human stories that will be affected by
their decision on the 23rd of June.

Bob brought Morris dancing to Denmark when he moved there 32 years ago. He had to give up his British citizenship to live there permanently and is married to a Dane.

her brothers moved to Copenhagen when their father got a new job working in the
pharmaceutical industry there. They go to international schools and are
learning to speak Danish.

Louise is a
dancer in the Royal Swedish Ballet in Stockholm. She trained in Britain before finding
a job abroad. The company has dancers from all over the world and uses English
as it’s primary language.

Leena
moved to Belgium when her husband was given a job in the EU institutions. She
says life is more comfortable and relaxed in the international community in
Brussels than in London. They are expecting a second child soon so her mother
is living with them to help out.

Geoff is
the captain of a super-yacht based in Genoa. He spends half his time at sea and
the other half with his Italian wife near Lake Garda. His misses British food,
particularly in the winter so gets his friend to send him British food parcels.

It was great to catch up with Mishal Husain to create portraits for her new show at Bloomberg, which features conversations with world leaders and pioneers. We’ve worked together before on her Observer Magazine cover, photographing in her mother’s living room. Needless to say, the Bloomberg newsroom was a rather different space, but she brought that same calm confidence and sharp presence. Dame Judi Dench & Brendan O’Hea – Die Zeit

  When I’m in my 90s I want to be like Judi Dench – witty, mischievous and drinking champagne at lunch. The team at Die Zeit asked me to photograph Dame Judi with fellow actor Brendan O’Hea. She and Brendan are long-term friends and it shows – they play off each other, make fools of each other and laugh constantly. A joy to witness. The portraits accompany a beautiful interview feature about `The man who pays the rent’ – a series of informal and intimate conversations between Dame Judi and Brendan. The book has just been published in Germany. I am still pinching myself to believe this happened…

Dracula – Lyric Theatre

  I loved sinking my teeth into the new adaptation of Bram Stoker’s horror classic, Dracula with Lyric Theatre. This is a show that truly uncovers the female voices at the heart of the tale, and I can’t wait to see it. It was a total pleasure to help bring art director Emilie Chen’s bold vision to life. We worked to create a look that is both powerful, unapologetic, and dripping with red light. The show’s leads Umi Myers and Mei Mac brought an awesome energy to the shoot, especially considering it was the hottest day of the year so far. Adapted by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm and directed by Emma Baggott, this is a theatrical thriller not to be missed.

Mishal Husain and her mother Shama for the cover of The all-new Observer Magazine. Exciting to be part of the new-era the world’s oldest Sunday newspaper. “Is there a term in any language, I wondered, for a place that was nearly your hometown, or could have been, had history not intervened?” Mishal Husain as written for the magazine about her trip to the city of her grandfather’s childhood, Lucknow, a place that he couldn’t visit himself once Pakistan and India were partitioned. I had the absolute pleasure to spend an afternoon with Mishal and her mother to create portraits to go with the article. It is a story hard to tell in a photograph, but I am especially proud of the image on the cover where Mishal and Shama sit with a portrait of her grandfather Shahid.   My studio was filled with a whirlwind of laughs and good vibes as an array of household names visited. We were all there to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Red Nose Day and TK Maxx making their fun raising chari-tees. I grew up watching Red Nose Day every year on the TV, it was an unmissable event for me.
