Census 2021
Image Library

Three weeks on the road, over 1500 miles driven, creating more than 100 portraits. The aim – capturing the huge diversity of England and Wales for the 2021 Census campaign.

The Census happens only once every 10 years, and enables the government to have an honest picture of every household in England and Wales. The results help to guide decisions about public funding and how the country can best support its diverse and unique communities, so it is super important that everyone takes part.

I was really excited to be commissioned for this campaign:  it was a chance to meet, hear and capture people’s stories, documenting the vast, colourful diversity of people in this country. And what an historic year to do it in as well, circumstances like no other.

The challenge and logistics of finding and contacting the right mix of ethnicities and different communities was immense. Thankfully I had the super skilled producer Morgan Evans on my side. She lit up her network of contacts all over the country, finding people to photograph from Essex to Exmoor, and Penzance to Penarth. Before long we had a wonderful list of people to meet on our trip: farmers, shop owners, teachers, students, fans, activists, community leaders, and families.  A road trip around the country was scheduled, maps pinned and time tables drawn, we were ready to go.

In Covid times nothing is simple. We had to be certain we were keeping everyone safe. Working in as small a production bubble  as we could we hit the road – PPE at all times, temperature checks twice a day, always cleaning and washing. Although it was just three people in a van, we had everything we needed to create images on the go – photographer, assistant and producer, a portable set of lights, and large supply of snacks. We photographed entirely outside, come rain or shine, capturing the reality of Britain, all the while making sure we kept everyone we met safe and secure.

I’m so proud of the resulting image library, I like to think of it as an archive of the nation, a snap shot of Britain in the strangest of years.

Huge thanks to all the people who let us photograph them, it was a total pleasure meeting you all. Massive thanks also to the team at M&C Saatchi who got me involved in this project. And of course, endless thanks to the small but incredible shoot team. I couldn’t have done it without you guys.

The Mishal Husain Show – Bloomberg

It was great to catch up with Mishal Husain to create portraits for her new show at Bloomberg, which features conversations with world leaders and pioneers. We’ve worked together before on her Observer Magazine cover, photographing in her mother’s living room. Needless to say, the Bloomberg newsroom was a rather different space, but she brought that same calm confidence and sharp presence. A huge thank you to Leonor Mamanna, the entire team at Bloomberg, Louise Heywood, and everyone else who ensured the day ran smoothly. Listen to the podcast on Apple, Spotify, or click here: LINK

Dame Judi Dench & Brendan O’Hea – Die Zeit

When I’m in my 90s I want to be like Judi Dench – witty, mischievous and drinking champagne at lunch. The team at Die Zeit asked me to photograph Dame Judi with fellow actor Brendan O’Hea. She and Brendan are long-term friends and it shows – they play off each other, make fools of each other and laugh constantly. A joy to witness. The portraits accompany a beautiful interview feature about `The man who pays the rent’ – a series of informal and intimate conversations between Dame Judi and Brendan. The book has just been published in Germany. I am still pinching myself to believe this happened…

Dracula – Lyric Theatre

I loved sinking my teeth into the new adaptation of Bram Stoker’s horror classic, Dracula with Lyric Theatre. This is a show that truly uncovers the female voices at the heart of the tale, and I can’t wait to see it. It was a total pleasure to help bring art director Emilie Chen’s bold vision to life. We worked to create a look that is both powerful, unapologetic, and dripping with red light. The show’s leads Umi Myers and Mei Mac brought an awesome energy to the shoot, especially considering it was the hottest day of the year so far. Adapted by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm and directed by Emma Baggott, this is a theatrical thriller not to be missed.

Andy Murray – Walker’s Shortbread

Had a blast directing and photographing a tennis legend. Pop your sound on for the video.  Safe to say, quality control was delicious on this one. Huge thanks to New Commercial Arts for trusting me with the vision. Mishal Husain – The Observer Magazine

Mishal Husain and her mother Shama for the cover of The all-new Observer Magazine. Exciting to be part of the new-era the world’s oldest Sunday newspaper. “Is there a term in any language, I wondered, for a place that was nearly your hometown, or could have been, had history not intervened?” Mishal Husain as written for the magazine about her trip to the city of her grandfather’s childhood, Lucknow, a place that he couldn’t visit himself once Pakistan and India were partitioned. I had the absolute pleasure to spend an afternoon with Mishal and her mother to create portraits to go with the article. It is a story hard to tell in a photograph, but I am especially proud of the image on the cover where Mishal and Shama sit with a portrait of her grandfather Shahid. Red Nose Day – TK Maxx & Comic Relief

My studio was filled with a whirlwind of laughs and good vibes as an array of household names visited. We were all there to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Red Nose Day and TK Maxx making their fun raising chari-tees. I grew up watching Red Nose Day every year on the TV, it was an unmissable event for me. So it is wonderful to be part of it this year, and to do my bit to help raise funds for the ace causes it’s supports. Go grab your chari-tee now! A huge thank you to the epic team at TK Maxx and Dundas PR, and everyone else who threw their energy and enthusiasm into making this happen.
