Good things comes to those who wait
will.i.am and Carl for The Sunday Times Magazine

It was four days before Christmas, midday and I had just finished my last shoot of the year. Time to go to Devon to see my family for a well earned break.

My phone rings.
“Charlie, are you still in London?”
“Yes”
“Can you photograph will.i.am this evening with his brother Carl?”

And so it was, no going to Devon for me on that day. And the waiting began. You see we didn’t know anything more at this point. Where would we be photographing them, when would we be meeting them or even if it was going to happen or not. We knew nothing really, but we had hope.

So I prepared for the shoot, got my gear together and positioned myself and my assistant in a cafe in central London. We waited hard by drinking coffee and talking about photography.

Finally we got some information: we would be photographing them at 8pm. It was 7pm… not much time. So we quick footed it with all my gear over to the hotel, and started harassing the poor lady in charge for a room to photograph Mr i.am and his brother in. After some serious persuasion we got an amazing suite for out shoot, moved in and got set up just in time. The nerves started to kick in… What would he be like? Would he be friendly or not? How long would we get with him?

But you can’t be nervous forever and after an hour we still had no news of him, and no idea if he was actually going to turn up or not. So I prepared some more, did a few more test shots of my assistant and decided that everything was still ready, just like it had been an hour ago. Another hour passed…

Finally, at 11pm I had my moment. Will and Carl arrived, tired but prepared and stepped in front of my camera…

Dame Judi Dench & Brendan O’Hea – Die Zeit

When I’m in my 90s I want to be like Judi Dench – witty, mischievous and drinking champagne at lunch. The team at Die Zeit asked me to photograph Dame Judi with fellow actor Brendan O’Hea. She and Brendan are long-term friends and it shows – they play off each other, make fools of each other and laugh constantly. A joy to witness. The portraits accompany a beautiful interview feature about `The man who pays the rent’ – a series of informal and intimate conversations between Dame Judi and Brendan. The book has just been published in Germany. I am still pinching myself to believe this happened…

Dracula – Lyric Theatre

I loved sinking my teeth into the new adaptation of Bram Stoker’s horror classic, Dracula with Lyric Theatre. This is a show that truly uncovers the female voices at the heart of the tale, and I can’t wait to see it. It was a total pleasure to help bring art director Emilie Chen’s bold vision to life. We worked to create a look that is both powerful, unapologetic, and dripping with red light. The show’s leads Umi Myers and Mei Mac brought an awesome energy to the shoot, especially considering it was the hottest day of the year so far. Adapted by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm and directed by Emma Baggott, this is a theatrical thriller not to be missed.

Andy Murray – Walker’s Shortbread

Had a blast directing and photographing a tennis legend. Pop your sound on for the video.  Safe to say, quality control was delicious on this one. Huge thanks to New Commercial Arts for trusting me with the vision. Mishal Husain – The Observer Magazine

Mishal Husain and her mother Shama for the cover of The all-new Observer Magazine. Exciting to be part of the new-era the world’s oldest Sunday newspaper. “Is there a term in any language, I wondered, for a place that was nearly your hometown, or could have been, had history not intervened?” Mishal Husain as written for the magazine about her trip to the city of her grandfather’s childhood, Lucknow, a place that he couldn’t visit himself once Pakistan and India were partitioned. I had the absolute pleasure to spend an afternoon with Mishal and her mother to create portraits to go with the article. It is a story hard to tell in a photograph, but I am especially proud of the image on the cover where Mishal and Shama sit with a portrait of her grandfather Shahid. Red Nose Day – TK Maxx & Comic Relief

My studio was filled with a whirlwind of laughs and good vibes as an array of household names visited. We were all there to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Red Nose Day and TK Maxx making their fun raising chari-tees. I grew up watching Red Nose Day every year on the TV, it was an unmissable event for me. So it is wonderful to be part of it this year, and to do my bit to help raise funds for the ace causes it’s supports. Go grab your chari-tee now! A huge thank you to the epic team at TK Maxx and Dundas PR, and everyone else who threw their energy and enthusiasm into making this happen. BAFTA Film Awards 2025

Stepping back into the Royal Festival Hall to create portraits at the BAFTA Film Awards was an absolute joy. There’s nothing quite like Britain’s biggest night in cinema. These are not photos that I could ever make alone – the BAFTA photography team are the very best partners. It’s been a true honour to work with such amazing people again to capture the smallest slither of the magic of cinema.
