How many cookbooks have you got? I’ve always thought the collection adorning the shelves in my flat is a pretty good one. Always – that is until I met John Hamilton, the Art Director for Penguin Books.

I was asked by The Independent’s Saturday Magazine to photograph John for an article about Penguin’s new publication – 100 Cookbook Covers in One Box. John has been collecting cookbooks ever since he was in charge of designing Jamie Oliver’s first Naked Chef book. Fast forward fifteen years and John now has over a thousand cookbooks at home.

No surprise then that I was rather excited to see his amalgamation of cookery design from across the world. John welcomed me in his home in Lewes and soon we were deep in cookbook design conversation. My portrait idea was to make the most of the sheer quantity of the books and surround John with them. Being a true book lover John did not mind a bit – he and his wife were keen to help make the best shot possible. We stacked books all over the table, chairs and sideboard in their kitchen. Piles of books nearly falling over everywhere, but worth it for the shot. I then balanced myself on a ladder to capture photos of John lying on the wooden floor surrounded by his favourite hardbacks.

John is a perfect sitter – up for anything and lovely to talk to. He told me about the mad Lewes Bonfire Night traditions (thank you, I would never have gone without the recommendation) and then topped the afternoon off with feeding me a tasty lunch. An excellent treat after a few hours of being surrounded by cookery books.

Thank you to The Independent’s Saturday Magazine for a great commission and John for being such great company and model.

You can read an online version of the article with my pictures on The Independent website.

Alan Cumming – EE BAFTA Film Awards 2026

Loved photographing the BAFTA Film Awards’ new host. Alan really took to our little box, throwing amazing shapes all shoot long. See him in full swing on stage this Sunday at the Royal Festival Hall. I will be there too, though hiding behind the curtain with a camera in hand.

Being Gordon Ramsay – Netflix

New key art for Netflix upcoming series Being Gordon Ramsay. This one started sixty floors up, watching the sun rise over London surrounded by maneki-neko in Gordon Ramsay’s new restaurant. And it finished with the executive chef Ronnie Kimbugwe throwing a huge bunch of carrots into the air. In between we took photos of course, but we also talked about love, family, training for triathlons, the best champagne, liquid nitrogen, obsessing over produce and a thousand other things. The shot list to make a poster like this is huge, with every person needing their own mix of accessories — from gently crawling crustaceans to giant architectural blueprints. But I love a challenge, so with coffee flowing, a colour-coded set, and an epic playlist, we got to work capturing the personalities of the brilliant characters surrounding our unstoppable protagonist. Gordon himself said on set “everyone here is the talent.” I could...

A wee bit of Scotland that’s come a long way. So much fun bringing this one to life. Huge thanks to New Commercial Arts for asking me to direct and photograph the campaign. Nicolas Hieronimus – Beauty Inc

It was a pleasure to work with the WWD Beauty Inc team for the first time, creating portraits for their special edition featuring Nicolas Hieronimus, this year’s recipient of the 2025 Pete Born Impact Award. The Mishal Husain Show – Bloomberg

It was great to catch up with Mishal Husain to create portraits for her new show at Bloomberg, which features conversations with world leaders and pioneers. We’ve worked together before on her Observer Magazine cover, photographing in her mother’s living room. Needless to say, the Bloomberg newsroom was a rather different space, but she brought that same calm confidence and sharp presence. A huge thank you to Leonor Mamanna, the entire team at Bloomberg, Louise Heywood, and everyone else who ensured the day ran smoothly. Listen to the podcast on Apple, Spotify, or click here: LINK

Dame Judi Dench & Brendan O’Hea – Die Zeit

When I’m in my 90s I want to be like Judi Dench – witty, mischievous and drinking champagne at lunch. The team at Die Zeit asked me to photograph Dame Judi with fellow actor Brendan O’Hea. She and Brendan are long-term friends and it shows – they play off each other, make fools of each other and laugh constantly. A joy to witness. The portraits accompany a beautiful interview feature about `The man who pays the rent’ – a series of informal and intimate conversations between Dame Judi and Brendan. The book has just been published in Germany. I am still pinching myself to believe this happened…
